Florida Schools, Explained

How every type of school works in Florida - public, charter, magnet, private - plus the official links to check any school by your address or ZIP code.

Moving to Florida with kids? This one page covers the whole system. No account, no sign-up - just how it works and where to check, straight from official sources.

Public schools

Public schools are free. Florida has 67 school districts - one per county - so your county runs your schools, sets the calendar, and handles registration. Your home address decides which schools your kids are zoned for, which is why two houses a street apart can be zoned to different schools. Every public school receives an official A-F grade from the Florida Department of Education each year.

Charter and magnet schools

Charter schools are also public and but run independently - you apply directly to the school instead of being assigned by address, and popular ones use lotteries. Magnet schools are public schools with a special focus (arts, STEM, languages) that accept students from across the district by application. Both are graded by the state like any public school.

Private schools and scholarships

Private schools set their own tuition, curriculum, and admissions, and Florida does not grade them. What surprises many families: Florida has state scholarship programs (through Step Up For Students) that can help pay private school tuition, and eligibility is now open to all Florida students regardless of income - though award amounts and priority vary.

Pre-K: free VPK for 4-year-olds

Florida gives every 4-year-old a free pre-kindergarten year called VPK (Voluntary Prekindergarten), at participating schools and childcare centers. You register through the state early learning system, not the school district.

Registering your kids

Each county district sets its own registration dates and process, so always check your county district website first. Almost everywhere you will need: proof of your Florida address (lease, closing documents, or utility bill), a birth certificate, immunization records on the Florida form (DH 680, transferred by any Florida doctor or health department), and a physical exam from the last 12 months. Kindergarten starts the year your child is 5 on or before September 1.

Check any school - by address or ZIP code

These are the places to look. Start with the official state grades, then use your county district site for exact school zoning.

One warning before you fall in love with a house: school zones change and every district draws its own lines. Before you buy or sign a lease, confirm the exact zoned schools for that address on the county district website.
